Top Travel Products for hEDS
"At your age, you have likely figured a few things out that work for you!"
October was a fun, exciting month for me. I travelled abroad for the first time in 5 years! I was excited but also I had a lot of travel anxiety. The "what if" kept going in my mind. Thankfully I had two things that would help me; experience and professional help.
Experience of 40 years of travel
My first trip abroad was when I was three months old and since then I have travelled to many cities, countries and continents. I learnt from my family about how to cope with car, bus, train, air travel and now in hindsight a lot of those tips and tricks were about my hypermobile state of being! But until I was diagnosed I thought it was just what we did as a family.
My top five travel products
These products are ones that I have tried and tested and used on planes, trains and automobiles.
My bum and seat bones are not very well padded so sitting hurts them and then my back. So years ago I started investing in cushions for cars, for travel and for comfort. This is my fave cushion for travelling. It is a blow up version so you control how much cushioning you need. I whip it out whenever I see a seat. Is packs down super easily into my bag.
I want to be the brand face of Oofos because OMG what a difference. For years I was told stable, solid shoes would help but my feet fascia is so sensitive I actually need comfort and space. These Oofos were amazing because I walked around the whole of Lisbon and my feet were cushioned. I also have sandals and saving up to get slippers!
I am super light sensitive and even more so after the laser eye operations so I need sunglasses all the time. The flip up ones I use come in handy on dry air planes as I wear my glasses and when the plane has the sun streaming in the windows, I find it so useful to wear them, slide the shade closed and then hang out with my calming music.
I wear hats a lot, even indoors, as they keep my eyes shaded and my skin covered from the sun as I get heat spots and hives a lot from the sunlight. On holiday I love wide brimmed hats but I do keep a bit of ribbon with me to tie it to my head when it gets windy!
A paper hat is great as it folds well and doesn't weigh much - handy for when it is a few days trip!
I have super loosey goosey thumbs which I have to strap up and keep supported especially when I travel because of course I manage to lift, pull or move something thinking I will be fine and then whoops, I can't use my hands for days. So instead I strap them up. I have small hands so supports have to work for my child like hands!

Professional Help
Thanks to Joo, I wrote about her last time, I was able to work on skills to help me soothe my nervous system as I travelled. She has been such a help on my hEDS journey that she is well worth hitting up for some hypermobile advice!
